Blood donation mobilization

Tien Phong Newspaper in partnership with Khanh Hoa Mobilization Board for Voluntary Blood Donation, Naval Academy and some relevant agencies organized the 2019 “Red Sunday” on January 19 with the participation of 700 students, donating 600 units of blood.

Nguyen Minh Hieu, Battalion 4, Naval Academy says, “This is the 3rd time I have donated blood. I feel proud that my blood will help save other lives during the New Year Holiday.” Earlier, Khanh Hoa Mobilization Board for Voluntary Blood Donation in cooperation with Vinpearl Land Nha Trang had held a blood donation campaign with 1,000 donors, giving 800 units of blood. Vinmec Nha Trang Hospital had mobilized its staff to join the life-saving blood donation campaign, collecting more than 50 units of blood. Besides, in January, the Mobilization Boards for Voluntary Blood Donation of Cam Lam District, Khanh Vinh District and Ninh Hoa Town; Nha Trang Tourism College, Nha Trang Technique & Technology College and Nha Trang National College of Pedagogy have held blood donation drives, drawing thousands of donors.

Nha Trang City Red Cross is mobilizing its members, Youth Union members, young people and public service staff to join voluntary blood donation after Tet. Nha Trang City Red Cross plans to hold a blood donation drive on February 17 with the participation of some 350 donors expected to give 300 units of blood, says Le Quoc Thinh, Chairman of Nha Trang City Red Cross. Moreover, some hospitals have also founded Urgent Blood Donors’ Teams joined by medical staff. The leader of Cam Ranh General Hospital says its Urgent Blood Donors’ Team has 40 members, most of whom are Youth Union members and young people. There are 4 blood types available for emergency needs.

Sufficient supply for Tet

Based on blood reserve plans in hospitals, Khanh Hoa Mobilization Board for Voluntary Blood Donation made a plan to organize blood donation drives with the participation of nearly 4,000 people, collecting some 3,500 units of blood in late 2018. Khanh Hoa Mobilization Board for Voluntary Blood Donation has cooperated with Khanh Hoa Hematology & Blood Transfusion Center and relevant agencies to hold 7 voluntary blood donation drives, collecting more than 2,000 units of blood so far.

From now to the end of January, there will be 7 additional blood donation drives in Nha Trang City, Cam Ranh City, Ninh Hoa Town, Cam Lam District and Stella Maris Major Seminary, expecting to collect 1,200 units of blood to meet the treatment and emergency needs after Tet. Moreover, there are about 1,000 blood bank members who are ready to give blood at any time in need for emergencies, according to Luu Thi Bich Huong, Vice-Chairperson of Khanh Hoa Provincial Red Cross.

“The blood collected in January is expected to meet the needs for the treatment and emergency needs in hospitals during the New Year holiday. All blood types A, AB, B and O are taken in sufficient quantities. Currently, the center reserves blood resources of 300 to 500 units of all types (about 50 units of AB blood type alone). In the run-up to Tet, based on the need for reserves, the center will provide hospitals with blood mostly required by Khanh Hoa General Hospital (nearly 1,200 units), district and private hospitals (about 500 units). The remaining standby blood in the center is about 500 - 700 units, enough for the supply for the first 2 weeks after Tet, says Vo Xuan Thanh, Director of Khanh Hoa Hematology & Blood Transfusion Center. Reportedly, the voluntarily donated blood has met nearly 99% of the demand for treatment and emergency needs for the past 15 years.
