Pupils are eager to learn garbage classification.

On May 19, 4th-graders were guided to classify garbage in an extracurricular program. Daily waste such as polystyrene boxes, plastic bottles, cans and newspaper were mixed and then required to be classified into different types. This is the first time the pupils have been provided basic knowledge about garbage classification, so they seemed to be so excited. The activity is in the “Green race” project founded by 11th –graders at Le Hong Phong Gifted High School.

Ly Du Khanh Han, says “4 of us include 3 at Le Hong Phong Gifted High School and 1 at Le Quy Don Gifted High School, Nha Trang City. We  develop the project to raise pupils’ awareness of environmental protection. The group had to prepared carefully for their first program taking place at Phuoc Tien Primary School.  Besides available documents, we had to translate some in English into Vietnamese to diversify activities and make them more suitable for primary school children."  The program focuses on 3 targets namely reducing, recycling and reusing, according to Pham Hong Van, Le Hong Phong Gifted High School, the founder the project.

After providing garbage classification knowledge, the members and more than 20 volunteers showed the children how to make pencil cases, pots, etc from used polystyrene boxes, plastic bottles, tins, etc. "We throw away things have no use anymore and the things will end up as trash. However, “not all trash are useless” is the message we would like to deliver to  pupils," adds Pham Hong Van.

"The program is so meaningful and interesting for pupils. Pham Hong Van has taken part in many charity activities in Ho Chi Minh City. I support her ideas about the extracurricular program as I find it so educational and practical for children," says Nguyen Thi Thuy, a parent of Pham Hong Van and Pham Minh Tuan, class 4/2, Phuoc Tien School.

Ly Du Khanh Han says, "I have shared my opinions and ideas for the project and my parents have backed me up and given us funding for purchasing trash, materials and train tickets to Nha Trang City to develop the project. If the program is effective, the group plans to continue running the program in Nha Trang next time."

Environmental protection and garbage classification knowledge integrated in games in extracurricular programs makes both the teaching and learning enjoyable, says Nguyen Thien Phuc, a teacher- in-charge of class 4/2, Phuoc Tien Primary School.
