Khanh Hoa Province is ready for the 2014-2015 open vaccination campaign against measles and rubella. 74,000 children aged between 1 and 14 in Khanh Hoa are expected to be vaccinated against the two life-threatening diseases.

The nationwide 2014-2015 dual vaccination campaign launched by the Ministry of Health and funded by the Global Alliance for Vaccines & Immunization (GAVI) Alliance aims to protect children from life-threatening measles and rubella.

The campaign is scheduled to take place in Khanh Hoa Province on September 22, 2014 to February 2015 with the first phase in September and October for children aged 1-5; the second one in November and December for those aged 6-10; and the third one for those aged 11-14.

24,000 kids in Khanh Hoa Province are expected to be immunized against measles and rubella in this campaign.

Huynh Thuy Phuong, Chief of Vinh Thanh Medical Center, says “All preparations for the first vaccination phase for children aged 1-5 scheduled on September 22 to October 15 have completed. On the first day, September 22, Vinh Thanh is the first commune to run the campaign with 200 children of Vinh Thanh Nursery School expected to be vaccinated. The remaining 528 kids in the commune will be vaccinated on September 23-26. An emergency team with 3 members is founded to assure vaccination safety."

Cau Ba Commune, Khanh Vinh District has also completed its preparations in terms of instrument, labor force, pre-vaccination screening, emergency plans, etc for the campaign. The first vaccination phase is scheduled to take place in Cau Ba Commune, Khanh Vinh District on October 1-20 for 291 children aged 1-5.

The vaccination locations include 137 medical stations and over 320 nursery, primary and high schools. The total cost of the campaign is expected to reach VND2.5 billion, including VND836 million from the provincial support. Nha Trang City and Khanh Vinh District are the first to launch the campaign with 1,000 kids expected to be vaccinated on the first day.

Emergency preparedness is assured with vaccination safety courses focusing on vaccine storage, pre-vaccination screening, counseling and emergency with the availability of anaphylaxis response kits. Over 10 itinerant emergency teams are founded together with onsite emergency teams at medical stations.

Vaccinated children should remain to be observed for 30 minutes after the vaccination, so that medical treatment can be provided rapidly if needed, according to Le Quang Thi, Deputy Director of Khanh Son District Medical Station.
