Recently, at a meeting with Khanh Hoa Province Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on crop production, Le Thanh Tung - Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production (under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) highly appreciated the results of restructuring the province's crops in recent years and proposed the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development implementing many solutions to improve the value and efficiency of agricultural production.

Actively supporting crop transformation

According to a report of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, in 2023, the province plans to plant nearly 93,000 hectares of trees annually. For perennial crops, in addition to industrial crops, the province has more than 17,700ha of fruit trees, mainly mangoes, pomelos, durians and bananas. These are crops that are suitable for soil conditions in Khanh Hoa, giving high yield, quality and economic efficiency.

In order to improve crop efficiency, over the years, farmers in the province have focused on changing crop structure. In which, mainly converted from mixed swidden gardens to growing fruit trees and annual plants; converting the area of one-crop rice that is difficult to irrigate to growing vegetables. The province has implemented policies to encourage and support people in the conversion of crops like support for seeds, fertilizers, irrigation systems, etc. As a result, in the period of 2017 - 2020, the province supported the conversion of 2,000 ha of plants. In the period of 2021 - 2025, the province plans to convert 5,800ha of inefficient annual and perennial crops to new crops.

According to Le Ba Ninh - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, over the years, many farmers have boldly changed crops, invested in expanding production, and formed specialized areas for growing valuable fruit and vegetable crops. In addition, up to now, the province has 22 growing area codes and 3 packing codes for exporting to other markets for mango, durian and rice.

Active production

Over the past 5 years, agricultural production has faced difficulties due to unfavorable weather; prices of fertilizers, pesticides and labor increased. Meanwhile, the current policy of supporting crop conversion is only applied in difficult and mountainous localities, and is no longer widely applied as before; unsatisfactory irrigation infrastructure; many agricultural products do not have a stable market.

According to Luong Kim Ngan - Deputy Director of the Provincial Sub-Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, in order to be proactive in production in 2023, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has guided localities and specialized agencies to review and deploy promptly support and supplement solutions in case of shortage of agricultural seeds and materials. Particularly for rice, Khanh Hoa organizes production by region.

Appreciating the direction of crop production in the province, Le Thanh Tung suggested that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development continue to focus on directing production, in case of damage caused by natural disasters, there should be solutions to support timely assistance to farmers. Along with expanding the production scale and improving the quality of agricultural products by applying safe and high-quality processes and standards, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is requested to orient farmers to build agricultural models associated with agriculture with eco-tourism, especially for the typical and specific crops of the province; implement solutions to ensure local food security, promote crop conversion, but carefully consider the conversion of rice-growing land to other crops; focus on developing commodity-oriented crops; do well in crop planning, apply digitization to improve the efficiency of planting area management and administration...
