Khanh Son: Increasing added value of agricultural products

Economic key
 
These days, many gardeners in Son Binh commune are focusing on post-harvest care for durian trees and some other fruit trees. Ta Quoc Phong - Chairman of Son Binh Commune People's Committee said: “There are 430 hectares of durian trees in the commune, 380 hectares of which  has been harvested; 70ha of green-skin grapefruit trees, 5ha of sugar tangerine trees, 45ha of coffee trees and 4ha of pepper trees. Recently, farmers in the commune have transformed and applied clean production solutions, meeting VietGAP standards. The whole commune has one VietGAP certified cooperative and 5 durian growing cooperative groups, including a VietGAP certified cooperative group. In the last fruit harvest, the whole commune has supplied to the market 2,000 tons of durians and 50 tons of green skin grapefruits. Over the years, fruit trees with high economic value have been developed by local people, partlt improving income and living standards.
 
Many other localities in the district such as Son Hiep, Son Trung, Ba Cluster Bac, To Hap town... have also developed many kinds of agricultural crops with high economic value suitable to the climate and soil. Up to now, the whole district has grown 1,908 hectares of durian trees, 752 hectares of banana trees, 345 hectares of green skin grapefruits and 71 hectares of rambutan trees. Other fruit trees such as mangosteen, jackfruit, turmeric, orange, tangerine and avocados have grown on 455 hectares; purple sugarcane has 236 hectares. The district's agricultural products are known to consumers inside and outside the province. In particular, Khanh Son durian has registered for trademark protection, is voted as Vietnam's agricultural gold brand, is produced cleanly by farmers, applied VietGAP standards. Some gardeners have been granted code number of planting areas for official export. Currently, on average, each hectare cultivated in the district has earned an income of 47.4 million VND/year. As a result, it has brought a fairly high income for local people, opening a door to escape poverty for many ethnic minority households.

Orientations
 
According to Mau Thai Cu - Secretary of Van Ninh District Party Committee, Chairman of Van Ninh District People's Council, in order to continue promoting its strengths in agriculture, the district has built a project to transform and develop the agriculture in the direction: shifting the mindset from "agricultural production" to "agricultural economy", producing high-value and diversified agricultural products along the value chain, in line with market requirements; shifting from the supply chain of agricultural products to the value chain of the commodity industry, transforming from agricultural production with emphasis on increasing output to high-tech, ecological and sustainable agriculture; moving from single-sector development to multi-disciplinary integration, from single-value to multi-value integration; developing the agriculture associated with the development of eco-tourism, agricultural tourism…
 
In order to implement these transformation orientations, the local agriculture sector has determined to focus on supporting the conversion of low economic efficiency crops to high economic efficiency crops, with the goal from now to 2030 to convert 888 hectares of crops; to step up the application of scientific and technical advances, especially to build fruit-growing areas applying high-tech agriculture, with a total area of 1,860 hectares by 2030.

In addition, the district focuses on building a value chain for key agricultural products such as fresh fruits, purple sugarcanes and processed products from fruits and purple sugarcanes. The district will strengthen and develop cooperatives and association groups; to attract investment capital sources to build agricultural and forest product processing establishments. The district also focuses on building typical local product brands under the OCOP program, perfecting standards, technical regulations, packaging and labels associated with product traceability; strengthen trade promotion, publicity, development and expansion of product consumption markets; invest in the construction and upgrade of infrastructure in service of agricultural development; train human resources for this industry; step by step apply digital transformation, increase information technology application in production, processing and consumption of local agricultural products…
 
One of the important goals of the district's agriculture sector is to increase the average income per hectare of arable land by 2025 1.7 times higher than now. By 2030, the average income per hectare of arable land will be 1.6 times higher than in 2025.
 
It is expected that the investment capital for restructuring the district's agriculture sector is more than 90 billion VND, directly supporting production development of more than 80 billion VND; support nearly 10 billion VND for cooperation, association and product consumption.
