Fishing boats face difficulties due to Covid-19 epidemic

Although it is the peak of the fishing season, in the last 2 consecutive trips, many offshore fishing vessels in Khanh Hoa province did not go to sea due to the influence of the Covid-19 epidemic.

Nguyen Trung Hieu - Head of Hon Ro Port Management Board said: "Many coastal communes and wards in Nha Trang are implementing social distance and blockade to prevent and control the epidemic, so fishing boats cannot go to sea”.

Also due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, over the past time, seafood purchase has faced many difficulties and fish prices fell sharply. Specifically, during the July trip, at Da Bac fishing port (Cam Ranh City), in addition to yellowfin tuna, the price was still maintained at 120,000 VND/kg, the price of other fish decreased by 50% than before... Meanwhile, the cost of tuna fishing boats increased by 15 %, long-distance nets increased by 25% compared to previous trips. The fishing yield was low, many ships suffered losses, so the ship owners decided to let the fishing vessel lie on the shore and wait for the epidemic to be controlled.

Lu Thanh Phong - Head of the Department of Exploitation and Development of Fisheries Resources (under the provincial Sub-Department of Fisheries) said the province has 746 offshore fishing boats but in this August trip, only 80 offshore fishing boats have put out to the sea.

The above fact has also greatly affected the purchase of seafood processing factories for export. A representative of a tuna processing and exporting enterprise in Suoi Dau Industrial Zone revealed that during the July trip, the company only purchased 1/10 of the fisheries compared to a normal trip. In August, the purchase became even more difficult. Therefore, the source of raw materials for processing and export of enterprises is being affected.
