Project to apply science and technology to improve the value of mangoes

The project "Application of science and technology to build a model linking the production chain, preliminary processing, preservation and consumption to improve the value of Khanh Hoa mango tree" deployed in Cam Lam district has just been tested and accepted. The project opens up the prospect of improving the value of mangoes, creating favorable conditions for mango consumption channels to go outside.
 
Scientist's efforts
 
The project is part of the Program to support the application and transfer of scientific and technological advances to promote socio-economic development in rural, mountainous and ethnic minority areas in the 2016-2025 period of the Ministry of Science and Technology. technology, in collaboration with Khanh Hoa province in the period 2017 - 2021 with a total budget of 10 billion VND.
 
Authorities chose Cam Lam district as the project implementation area because this is the largest mango growing area in the province. The project consists of 2 components, of which component 1 builds a model of business linkage - farmers cultivate Australian mangoes and Hoa Loc mangoes in the direction of good agricultural practices; Component 2 builds a model for preliminary processing and preservation of mangoes using MAP-modulated gas packaging technology (method of product packaging in air-blocking materials).
 
According to Master Hoang Vinh - Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology South Central Coast - project member, component 1 will be implemented in the period 2017 - 2020 with a total area of 70.6ha (Australian mango 53.5ha, Hoa Loc sand mango 17.1ha) in 3 localities of Cam Lam district (Cam Duc town, Cam Hai Tay and Cam Thanh Bac communes). Accordingly, mango growers are guided by VietGAP process, technical support, materials, fertilizers, pest management, water-saving irrigation, etc. After 3 years of implementation, households participating in the project have learned how to clean mango cultivation in the direction of VietGAP; Mango yield is quite good, averaging 10 tons/ha/year. At the same time, coordinate with granaries and cooperatives to consume products; Net profit for Australian mangoes is more than 173 million VND/ha/year, Hoa Loc sand mango is more than 214 million VND/ha/year. Total profit of component 1 is approximately 13 billion VND. The authorities also organized 4 training courses with 200 participants, 2 tours of models…
 
Enterprise's efforts
 
The project helped Van Huong Co., Ltd to build a mango brand; organize registration and certification of planting area codes, packing facility codes, and facilitate the consumption of mangoes in China by official channels.
 
Nguyen Long An - Director of Van Huong Co., Ltd. - Project Manager said that, after the initial period of difficulty in finding premises, setting up a factory to deploy component 2; In early 2021, the unit deployed to purchase and preliminarily process mangoes for farmers. With technical support from the Institute of Agricultural Electromechanical Engineering and Post-Harvest Technology (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the company has implemented the mango preservation process according to MAP-modulated gas packaging technology. can extend the storage time for more than 30 days but still ensure the quality of fresh mangoes, natural yellow, characteristic smell, sweet taste... The processing line has a capacity of 8 tons/day. After 2 months of implementation (April and May), purchasing and preliminary processing according to new technology, the company has sold more than 200 tons of mangoes to farmers (more than 145 tons of Australian mangoes, nearly 55 tons of Hoa Loc mangoes), exceeding stated target. According to the company's leaders, the model gives good results, can recover capital over 4 years, the ratio of net profit to investment capital is 14.82%, net profit to total revenue is 1.22%.
 
Engineer Tran Gioi - project member said, the project has met the transfer of technology at farmers and preliminary processing facilities. The model contributes to encouraging farmers to produce clean, organic production that not only meets basic standards but also works towards higher standards such as GlobalGAP. This is the basis for agricultural products to reach more demanding markets and reach out further in the coming time.
