Cooperation to develop seaculture sustainably

To exploit the potentials and advantages of seaculture, recently, Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee and Vietnam Seaculture Association have signed a cooperation agreement to promote marine farming in the province.

Khanh Hoa has potentials and advantages, so it has soon become a major aquaculture center of the country. However, the development of marine farming in the province still stops at some species, including lobster and some marine fish species. Currently, the province has 60,647 lobster cages with about 1,500 tons/year and more than 9,000 marine fish cages with output of nearly 8,300 tons/year. Over the years, the inadequacies in the farming of lobsters and sea fish have gradually revealed: The farming technology is outdated, mostly in traditional wooden cages, using fresh feed; the stocking density is not guaranteed; the environment in the farming area is increasingly polluted...

Nguyen Trong Chanh - Director of Khanh Hoa Fisheries Department said that the province's policy is to quickly develop seaculture in the direction of modern commodity production, ensuring food safety and environmental protection. To implement these issues, the province strengthens to attract technology and investment capital, develops the fisheries sector in order to diversify farming methods, suitable for each object; to apply science and technology to increase productivity and quality of aquatic products. In the agricultural restructuring, the province focuses on developing marine aquaculture in the direction of increasing added value and sustainable development.
 
Accordingly, the province orients people to raise species with high economic value such as lobsters and fish species in remote waters along islands and encourages farming in the form of industrial cages. In addition, in the development orientation of marine culture in the coming period, the province also attaches special importance to the development of cage culture with the development of ecotourism and tourism; reorganize production and build value chains for cultured aquatic species; to attach importance to linking the stages of seed production, food, supporting industries with stages of raising, harvesting, processing, and consuming...
 
In order to develop seaculture in the coming time, the Provincial People's Committee recommends that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development give priority to capital sources for the province to implement infrastructure investment programs and projects for marine products; have policies to support farmers to switch from traditional cages to HDPE plastic cages to adapt to climate change; adopt policies to encourage enterprises to invest in aquaculture in sea waters from 3 to 6 nautical miles under the management of the province. The Provincial People's Committee also requested the Vietnam Marine Seaculture Association to support and connect investors to Khanh Hoa to deploy advanced and modern marine farming models, building value chains for key marine products of the province and cooperating to test new and effective farming models and objects to deploy them for farmers to apply ...
 
In order to exploit the potentials and advantages of developing marine aquaculture in the province, recently, the Provincial People's Committee and Vietnam Marine Seaculture Association signed a cooperation agreement on sustainable marine aquaculture development in Khanh Hoa. Nguyen Huu Dung - Chairman of Vietnam Marine Seaculture Association said, “The association and its member units wish to cooperate with localities to promote sustainable marine farming, improve production efficiency for fishermen."
 
To implement the cooperation agreement with the province, the association will organize experts to assist Khanh Hoa in re-evaluating the current status and potential of marine farming so that the province orientates to rational use of marine space; coordinate to implement the Project of sustainable seaculture development in Khanh Hoa province until 2030. In addition, the Vietnam Seaculture Association will support the province to improve and transform marine farming methods in the bay and coastal areas of the province; connect to build sustainable industrial marine farming models in the area; look for and introduce international partners to the province to attract investment and transfer advanced marine farming technology; organize professional training classes.
