After a long period of stopping raising or transferring to other subjects due to the effects of the Covid-19 epidemic, up to now, the price of sweet snails has risen again, encouraging many households to raise this kind of snails.

Sweet snail price going up

Nguyen Lien in Ninh Hai ward, Ninh Hoa town, Khanh Hoa share, “At the beginning of this year, few households dared to release breeding stock because the output was very precarious due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic. Snail prices sometimes fell to about 140,000 VND/kg due to non-export. My family has changed all over 1ha of snails farming to raising grape seaweed”.

Although many people are concerned about the precarious output sweet snail, at the beginning of the season, Nguyen Thi Thuy's household  in Ninh Hai ward still invested to raise 1.2 million snails. Up to now, after 5 months, her family has sold 4 tons of snails at VND185,000 VND/kg. They still have about 3 tons of snails not to be sold as they are waiting for higher prices.

Some traders specializing in buying snails in Ninh Hoa town, Van Ninh district said that the reason for the increase in snail prices is due to the small farming area at the beginning of the season and low production of sweet snails. Meanwhile, sweet snail sale is rising, partly thanks to domestic consumption.
The price of sweet snails is rising again, more raisers have backed to sweet snails. Nguyen Van Thien - a sweet snail breeder producer in Ninh Phuoc commune (Ninh Hoa) said: “From end May to end June, many people have bought sweet snail breeders to raise. Only in nearly 1 month, I sold out 16 million breeders, in February at the beginning of the aquaculture season sold only 1 million. The price of sweet snail breeders has increased from VND2.5/head to over VND4/head. Currently, dozens of seed producers in Ninh Phuoc are busy producing to supply for raisers in and outside the province”.

More people back to raising sweet snails

According to Tran Hai - Chairman of Ninh Hai Ward People's Committee, in 2019, Ninh Hai ward, one of the key areas of snail rearing in Ninh Hoa, has more than 40 hectares of sweet snails. However, at the beginning of the aquaculture season, few households raised sweet snails. By this time, when the price of sweet snails has recovered, many households have started raising them again and the farming area is over 10 hectares now.

In some other localities in the province such as Cam Lam, Cam Ranh, Van Ninh, many households have also released sweet snails back. According to the plan, the whole province will raise more than 710ha sweet snails in 2020. At the beginning of the year, due to concerns about the output, the area for raising snails is not much. About 2 months ago, the area of raising sweet snails has just started to increase again. By this time, the province has raised more than 600ha of sweet snails, 80% compared to the same time last year.

According to Vo Khac En - Deputy Director of Sub-Department  of Fisheries, the output of commercial snail depends largely on export market. Before the effects of Covid-19, snail consumption was also greatly affected by the Chinese market tightening the quota. In current conditions, sweet snail raisers should keep abreast of market movements as well as comply with the conditions on standards, quality, etc. In the process of raising, people need to pay attention to farming as planned, registered, fully declared to the management agency. In the long term, in order to stabilize the output for sweet snails, the fisheries will conduct restructuring of farming objects suitable to the conditions of each farming area and the needs of the market.
