Invested since March, 2017, more than 6 hectares of grapefruit grown under the VietGap model in Son Thanh village, Khanh Phu commune of a farmer named Dang Thai Luyen has given results. During the past few days, more than 5,000 grapefruits have been sold to supermarkets in Nha Trang City. The grower said, thanks to VietGap certification, he did not meet difficulty to find output for his products. Grapefruit trees are tended with organic fertilizer and biological products as pesticides; the fruits are wrapped to prevent pests and diseases. Thanks to that, grapefruits always look good and have shiny skin. "Growing grapefruits under the VietGap model needs more labor and costs but the output is much easier and the price is higher than grapefruits grown in the traditional model," Luyen said.

The VietGap grapefruit model is one of the biotechnology applications deployed in Khanh Vinh District over the years. Annual crops, perennial trees and forestry trees have been gradually applied with biotechnology to crossbreed and create sources of disease-free and high-yield seeds. There have been businesses in the district investing in the application of high technology and biotechnology in the production of melons, tomatoes... From 2014 to 2016, the People's Committee of Khanh Vinh District has chaired the implementation of 3 topics and 1 project, including: building intensive model of planting acacia trees to provide raw materials, evaluating the economic efficiency of jackfruit trees in the district, building Cayennen melon planting model in the district, developing green-skin grapefruit trees according to VietGap standards. In addition, through professional training courses, district authorities also propagandized people to use synthetic probiotics and biopharmaceuticals in production to improve product quality and protect the environment.
 
According to Ms. Ca Tong Thi Men – Vice-chairwoman of Khanh Vinh District People's Committee, implementing the Directive No. 50 of the Secretariat on promoting the development and application of biotechnology for the cause of industrialization and modernization, local authorities have also stepped up the application of biotechnology in other fields in addition to agriculture. In breeding, from 2017 to 2019, the district implemented the cow breeding program, which improved breeding efficiency in households with a total of 639 heads, contributing to improving quality of herds, helping farmers to be more aware of the effectiveness of breeding. In addition, at the cow farm of Khanh Hoa Clean Agricultural Joint Stock Company and some local farms, bio-products for breeding have been added in order to provide energy, mineral salts, vitamins, calcium for cattle. In the field of environmental protection, the district uses biological products to treat odors in landfills and markets.
 
Vice-chairwoman Men said that biotechnology has made great contributions to promoting socio-economic development of the district, especially improving the quality and competitiveness of agricultural and forestry products; ensuring food security, helping people to restructure and develop sustainably agriculture, provide products to ensure community health and the environment... "To continue promoting the application of biotechnology to fields and districts, the district suggests the authorities at all levels and branches paying more attention in transferring science and technology applications to the district, especially in agriculture; training officials working in technology, science and biotechnology. Since then, it wil contribute to improving the applicability and the popularity so that biotechnology is increasingly going into the production of the people ”, Ms. Men said.
