Over the past years, the Labor Federation of Khanh Hoa Province has mobilized fishermen to join fishing unions. Then, the unions have become a fulcrum for fishermen firmly cling to the sea and go to the offshore.

Connecting fishermen

According to the leadership of the provincial Labor Confederation, from 2013 up to now, the provincial Trade Union has focused on mobilizing and establishing 9 fishing unions with more than 1,400 members who are ship owners and crew members are. The fishing unions are in Phuoc Dong commune, Vinh Truong ward, Xuong Huan ward, Vinh Tho ward, Vinh Nguyen ward, Vinh Phuoc ward (Nha Trang city), Ninh Thuy ward (Ninh Hoa town), Cam Loi ward (Cam Ranh city), and Dai Lanh commune (Van Ninh district).

After being established, the fishing trade unions have done their duties well, gathering and uniting fishermen in the spirit of supporting and helping each other in cases of meeting difficulties and risks on sea. The trade unions have propagandized and mobilized the members to help each other in fishing to improve labor and production efficiency, an gradually improve living. In 2019, only ship owners in the fishing unions in Nha Trang have exploited more than 30,000 tons of seafood. On average, each union member has an income of VND10 million a month. This is considered a good signal. Fisherman Tran Van May, member of Phuoc Dong commune's Fishing Union said, “Since joining the union, our long trips at Truong Sa fishing ground have always been accompanied by brothers. When machines broke down, other ships rescued and supported each other in time, thereby creating a solid offshore.”

In addition, the executive committee of the fishing unions propagandized about the Law of the Sea, Vietnam's fishing zone, no fishing in the waters of other countries and policies to encourage off-shore fishing; coordinated with professional units to open many training sessions on how to handle accidents at sea in order to help union members improve their skills, knowledge of laws, labor safety and the State's strategy in fishing development.

Typically, Vinh Truong fishing union has mobilized VND120 million, Phuoc Dong fishing union has mobilized VND65 million ... From that contribution, up to now, trade unions have timely supported for 3 people whose ships were sunk; dozens of union members who were injured at sea; more than 100 cases of union members in difficult circumstances, etc. With the support of the provincial Labor Confederation, the fishing unions gave more than 1,000 gifts, worth 300,000VND each to the children of fishermen in unions with difficult circumstances but studying well. In addition, labor unions also mobilized units and businesses to give thousands of life jackets, medicine cabinets and crew insurance for fishing boat owners in the unions.

Nguyen Hoa - Chairman of the provincial Labor Confederation said that the fisheries unions have become the place to connect fishermen in fishing as well as in life. The trade unions have catched advantages, difficulties and the aspirations of the union members, helped fishermen peacefully cling to the sea, and build national defense and  security at sea. Up to now, all trade unions have issued operation regulations, taken care of living of union members, exchanged fishing experience for crew members and ship owners, set up effective fishing teams, propagating and disseminating new legal documents as well as current situation of the sea, etc. In the coming time, trade unions will continue to mobilize businesses, individuals, union members and laborers to join hands to help fishermen cling to the sea safely, and support unions to develop strongly, creating firm fulcrums for fishermen to cling to the sea.
