These days, Hon Ro Port becomes busier when a lot of offshore fishing boats come back from the first sea-going trip of the new year. Most of them have high fishing yield.

Bumper crop, high price

Fisherman Nguyen Van Thanh (in Hon Ro, Nha Trang), said that, “This time is the main crop of tunas, therefore, a lot of boats do offshore fishing. Most of the boats have good fishing yield and earn good profit.” Each boat caught 30 - 40 tunas weighing 1.2 - 1.5 tons. Some boat caught even over 2 tons.

Fishermen are also happier as fishery purchase prices at Hon Ro Port are higher. A fisherman named Tran Van Tinh (in Vinh Truong, Nha Trang) said that blue fin tunas are purchased at VND125,000 – VND130,000/kg. His boat earned VND150 million after expenses deducted. Each fisherman on this boat earned about VND10 million, the boat owner earned nearly VND100 million. Meanwhile, stripjack tunas are purchased at VND30,000/kg. Owning to good fishing yield and high prices, fishermen are very delighted after the sea-going trip before Tet.

Preparation for sea-going trip through Tet

According to boat owners, after this sea-going trip, they will take a rest some days and prepare necessities for the sea-going trip through Tet. Beside necessary things, we will bring jam, watermelon seeds, pickled scallion heads, glutinous rice cakes to celebrate Tet on the sea.”

According to Nguyen Trung Hieu, head of Hon Ro Port management board, many boats have filled in and prepared necessary things and ice to put out to the sea, and they will come back on the fourth or the fifth of the lunar new year. To supply logistics services for fishing boats, there’s always someone on duty at the port.

On January 22, the provincial Agency of Fisheries organized fishing departure ceremony 2019 for the fishermen in the province. About 100 fishing boats attended the event. Also at the ceremony, the provincial Agency of Fisheries and some businesses in fishery gave presents to encourage fishermen in fishing.
