Khanh Hoa continues program for ethnic minority people and mountainous areas

Socioeconomic development program for the ethnic minority people and mountainous areas for the period of 2016 – 2020 has attained significant results.

In two years of 2016 and 2017, more than VND6.8 billion was invested for 586 households to carry out production models. In 2018, the province has supported for 400 economic production models with more than VND4.8 billion. Most of the models focus on grapefruit, banana, sugarcane, manioc, corn, breeding, etc. In addition, hundreds of agriculture encouragement on techniques to take care of plants and animals have been held; and 80 ethnic minority households have studied typical production models in some provinces of the Highlands and the South region.

According to the Ethnic Section, supporting household economy by suitable economic models is a main factor to lower the rate of poor households in the ethnic minority and mountainous areas from 71% in 2015 to 58.16% in 2017.

The province has also attended to social security. From 2016 up to now, thousands of ethnic people minority households water metters and pipes with expenditure of over VND8 billion; 172 houses of poor ethnic minority people have been repaired with over VND2 billion in total expenditure with more than 1,600 ethnic minority people given vocational training.

Beside 16 roads to production areas with total investment of nearly VND80 billion, the New Rural Area Program and Program 135 have poured investment in works of traffic roads, schools, cultural houses, markets, clean water, irrigation, community house, etc. with about VND57 billion. Over VND1.2 billion to repair traffic works, irrigational works, community houses, water, etc.

Up to now, the appearance of rural mountainous areas has been changed. The investment in infrastructure has partly improved living as well as facilitated production and business.

From now to 2020, the socioeconomic development program for the ethnic minority people and mountainous areas focuses on 4 big contents, including propaganda to raise awareness of the law, support for production to reduce poverty, implementation of social security policy and investment in infrastructure. The province strives to fulfill targets, especially reduce the rate of poor households in the ethnic minority and mountainous areas by 5% - 6% each year. By 2020, average income of the ethnic minority people will reach VND12 million/person/year; rate of trained ethnic minority laborers will attain 40%, rate of ethnic minority people using hygien water will be 95%, etc.
