Promoting values of folk songs, dances and music of ethnic minorities

Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee recently promulgated a plan on implementing the project on preserving and promoting the values of folk songs, dances and music of ethnic minorities in association with developing tourism in the province in 2021-2030 period. Khanh Hoa Newspaper interviewed Le Van Hoa, deputy director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports, about this subject.

- The plan will be implemented in two periods. The 2022-2025 period includes five tasks: making an inventory of types of folk songs, dances and music of ethnic minorities; reviving and promoting the values of folk songs, dances and music of ethnic minorities in association with developing tourism; incorporating some types of folk songs, dances and music of ethnic minorities into teaching programs and extracurricular activities of schools in the areas of  ethnic minorities; introducing and popularizing the values of folk songs, dances and music; building programs connecting folk songs, dances and music with tourism development. In the 2026-2030, besides continuing implementing the tasks of the first period, the department will make assessments to offer titles of people’s artist and excellent artist to outstanding artists and organize a conference to review the implementation of the plan.
 
- What are some main content of the plan?
 
- Apart from specifying making inventories and products to introduce the folk songs, dances and music of ethnic minorities, the plan of the provincial People’s Committee also stated building specific models in localities in order for the types of folk songs, dances and music to be promoted effectively in people’s everyday life and to serve tourism. The districts of Khanh Son and Khanh Vinh and Ninh Hoa Town have to revive, hold performances, teach and popularize the values of folk songs, dances and music of ethnic minorities in communities, families, and schools. Localities have to form a local club, music troupe and cultural folk branch; select and revive traditional cultural activities on the occasions of Tet and traditional festivals to create cultural products serving communities and cultural tourism.
 
- The provincial Department of Education and Training assumes the responsibility for incorporating some types of folk songs, dances and music into ethnic minority boarding schools and schools at all levels in the areas of ethnic minorities. The teaching programs need to focus on introducing the origins and roles of folk songs, dances and music and increase extracurricular activities about folk songs, dances and music in order to get the students’ interest in folk songs, dances and music. The provincial Department of Tourism creates chains of cultural tourism products and community tourism at potential areas to help tourists learn and experience the folk songs, dances and music.
 
- What does the implementation of this plan mean to community cultural life in the areas of ethnic minorities in the province?
 
- The plan of the provincial People's Committee aims to concretize the content of the project on preserving and promoting the values of folk songs, dances and music of ethnic minorities in association with developing tourism in 2021-2030 period issued by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. It also aims to raise people’s awareness, pride and initiative in preserving and promoting the values of the nation’s traditional cultural values; and gradually build cultural products from folk songs, dances and music to contribute to the socioeconomic development of localities in the province. The tasks need to be implemented effectively and in accordance with local conditions.
