Khanh Hoa provincial library has implemented many activities in order to bring books to readers, promote reading culture and advocate lifelong learning in communities. These activities have achieved initial positive results.

Complementing the project on intensifying lifelong learning in libraries, museums, cultural centers and clubs across the province, the provincial library has cooperated with other departments and sectors to carry out numerous practical activities, for example holding book contests and circulating books to localities. Since 2015, books contests and book storytelling contests with different subjects have become annual activities at many primary and junior high schools in Khanh Hoa. These contests have encouraged children to read more books and created opportunities for them to tell what they read to other children. “I love reading books and telling book stories to my friends. I have joined many book storytelling contests and learnt many useful things through the contests,” Cao Ngoc Anh, a pupil at Phuoc Hoa 2 Primary School (Nha Trang City) said.

The provincial library also used the funding, books and other publications from programs to develop the library network from provincial to grass roots levels; boosted contributions from the public to improve libraries and set up bookshelves at hamlets and residential groups. The provincial library renovated and embellished the children’s reading room with an area of over 200 square meters. Besides, the library sent many publications presented by publishers, authors, and readers to district libraries. From 2015 to 2020, Khanh Hoa provincial library have been given 9,714 publications and sent 4,005 publications to the libraries at grass roots levels.

In addition, the provincial library often carried out propaganda activities about books, such as book exhibitions, on the media and social networks. In the past three years, the library organized 108 transfers of books to the localities with 107,441 publications. Circulation of books to schools, border posts, and commune libraries, etc. has also been maintained.

Khanh Hoa provincial library held training courses for the librarians and staff at the libraries and reading rooms at grass roots levels; has been providing instructions on using library management software for commune libraries and SOS Nha Trang Children’s Village. The library also set up four commune libraries; built a store of 76,862 books intended for the libraries and reading rooms at grass roots levels; held 11 roving book exhibitions at schools.

Apart from the positive results, there have still been some difficulties in promoting book reading in communities in Khanh Hoa, for example, the decrease in operational efficiency of the libraries set up at commune post offices and lack of transportation to carry books to communes and hamlets. In order to solve the difficulties, it is necessary to raise the awareness and competence of library staff at grass roots level; improve the quality of libraries at district level; build reading rooms at new rural communes and disadvantaged areas, according to Nguyen Chau Hung, director of Khanh Hoa provincial library.
