According to the statistics of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports, around 20% of public libraries in the province can meet the reading needs of all types of readers; the libraries over the province often receive 470,000 visits per year. Khanh Hoa Provincial Library has carried out many propaganda activities in order to promote reading. The unit has achieved its 2018 target and exceeded last year’s target, as said by Phan Thi Long Tra, Deputy Director of the provincial library.
Many activities such as book storytelling contests for children, propagandas, and exhibitions of publications held at public places and schools have partly encouraged reading among communities, especially among students. Khanh Hoa Provincial Library in 2018 upgraded the reading rooms for children, basing on the socialized funds. The upgraded reading space has attracted a large number of young readers. Some schools in Nha Trang associated with the library to hold extracurricular activities at the library. The new reading space has also received a positive response from the parents. “I often bring my children to the provincial library where they can find many of their favorite books,” said Nguyen Thanh Thuy Hoa living in Bach Dang Street.

The provincial library in recent years has also circulated publications to the localities, especially the remote areas across the province as a means to build reading interest. In 2018, the library circulated 38,000 copies of books to the localities; established four spots to collect books at schools, bringing the total number of the spots to 76; shared 622 donated copies of publications with the local libraries.
Khanh Hoa is having nine district-level libraries. These libraries despite facing many difficulties have made efforts to encourage reading development in the communities. Since the beginning of this year, the district-level libraries have issued and renewed library cards for 2,265 readers; received 82,828 visits; circulated 12,285 copies to 76 reading spots.
The promotion of reading in Khanh Hoa still faces many difficulties. For example, the facilities of many libraries have still not good enough to meet the reading demand of readers; the information technology has not been widely used; some libraries are currently far from residential areas. As stated by Vo Ngoc Hung, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports, in order to solve these problems, in 2019, the department will intensify the collaboration with the local people’s committees and other departments to better the activities of the district- and commune-level libraries; increase the circulated books; propose that the National Library provides Khanh Hoa’s district-level libraries with a library management software.
