The Department of Culture and Sports of Khanh Hoa Province held a conference on November 27 to discuss about the preservation and promotion of Dien Khanh Ancient Citadel.

The Department of Culture and Sports of Khanh Hoa Province held a conference on November 27 to discuss about the preservation and promotion of Dien Khanh Ancient Citadel.

The attendees proposed and discussed some ideas and solutions in order to reach the consensus on this matter. Many attendees paid much attention in promoting the monument so that its historical and cultural values can be deployed effectively both at the present and in the future. The conference agreed that the preservation of Dien Khanh Ancient Citadel needs to be associated with the sustainable development of Dien Khanh District.

PhD Tran Duc Anh Son, Deputy Director of Da Nang Institute for Socio-Economic Development, said that among the six national monuments and tens of provincial historical and cultural monuments in Dien Khanh District, Dien Khanh Ancient Citadel was a typical monument having significant cultural, historical and tourism values. The citadel’s special values should be deployed to serve the local tourism effectively and sustainably.

As stated by Associate Professor and PhD Dang Van Bai, Vice-Chairman of Vietnam Cultural Heritage Association, the best solution for preservation and promotion of Dien Khanh Ancient Citadel is community ecotourism. This type of tourism will help the locality to make use of the natural resources and local culture; protect the heritage; and improve the well-being of the local people. In order for the ancient citadel to become a community ecotourism attraction, it requires the cooperation of the State management agencies, businesses and the community.

Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee in February 2016 issued Decision No.438 on approval for the  adjustment to the planning project of Dien Khanh’s central region. According to Le Van Hoa, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports, the preservation and promotion of Dien Khanh Ancient Citadel needs an overall and long-term plan, in which the center of Dien Khanh will develop as a popular tourist attraction, and the ancient citadel will become a venue for cultural and arts events.

Dien Khanh Ancient Citadel project also needs to be carried out with appropriate steps, as said by Dien Khanh District Party Committee Secretary Nguyen Van Ghi. At first, the province’s cultural sector and Dien Khanh District need to collect, compile, and issue the documents about the monument; restore the past intangible cultural practice of Dien Khanh citadel. The next steps need to be implemented as planned to preserve and promote the monument as a rural ecotourism destination.

Dien Khanh Ancient Citadel is one of the strongholds built in the reign of the King Nguyen Phuc Anh in 1793. Many significant historical events took place at this place . The place used to be the political and administrative center of Binh Khanh District (later was renamed Binh Hoa) for over 150 years.
