Nguyen Thi Quyen (born in 1960) and her son Nguyen Hoai Tan (born in 2000) live in Ninh Hiep Ward, Ninh Hoa Town, Khanh Hoa Province. Quyen is suffering from heart failure stage C. Her son had to drop out of school to earn a living for both of them.

Quyen and her son Tan are living in a desperate circumstance. Even plain cooked rice and a chili salt can be their meal. Sometimes, their neighbors give them some vegetables or other types of food. “We feel happy if we have something to eat every day,” said Quyen.

Quyen's husband died in a traffic accident in 2007 while working as a loading and unloading worker in Nha Trang City. A relative of Quyen allowed her and her son to live in his small old house. Before being diagnosed with heart failure, Quyen often rode her old bicycle to a small fishing wharf in Ninh Da Ward to buy fishes and sell to people. However, in early 2017, Quyen often felt weak and fainted during work. At Ninh Hoa General Hospital, she was diagnosed with heart failure which progressed to a severe stage and required prompt treatment.

Apart from heart failure, Quyen also has a large tumor in her abdomen. The tumor is growing, but she is unable to meet the cost of the treatment which is available at an upper level hospital. She has been deeply depressed at the thoughts of her young son, their financial difficulty and her cost of treatment. Quyen is hospitalized every few days because of her sickness and disease.

Quyen’s son, Tan, had to give up his studies at the vocational school to take care of his mother. He is doing loading and unloading work at a local market from 11pm to 7am in order to get money to buy medicine for his mother. He earns around VND1 to 3 million per month. Tan is working hard with the hope that his mother will soon get better and he can continue his studies to get a better job in the future.

According to Ho Trong Phuc, vice-chairman of Ninh Hiep Ward People's Committee, Quyen’s family is a nearly poor household in the ward. The ward mobilized financial support which could partly helped Quyen’s family. Phuc wishes that through Khanh Hoa Newspaper, more people can know about the circumstance of Quyen’s family and offer help to them.
