The two siblings Nguyen Duc Long (born in 2005) and Nguyen Thi Thanh (born in 2008), who are living in Phuc Ninh Hamlet, Cam Phuc Nam Ward, Cam Ranh City, have suffered platelet function disorder since birth. They are receiving treatments at Khanh Hoa General Hospital.

According to Pham Thi Vien, mother of Long and Thanh, Long’s disease was found when he was vaccinated. Long’s hand swelled, and there was prolonged bleeding at the injection site. After medical examinations, Long was diagnosed to have platelet function disorder. When Long was about two years old, he often had abnormal bleeding from his gums and teeth. Since then, he was frequently hospitalized at Khanh Hoa General Hospital. Thanh, Long’s younger sister, was also born with this disease.

As said by Doctor Do Thanh Toan, Deputy Head of Department of Pediatrics of Khanh Hoa General Hospital, the platelet function disorder causes frequent bleeds from nose, gums, teeth and from impact. The frequent blood loss can result in anemia. For this reason, Long and Thanh need to be hospitalized regularly for blood transfusion. This is a chronic disease with no specific remedy; therefore, the two siblings need long-time treatment and need to be watched closely.

Due to the disease, Long and Thanh had to stop their learning at school. Reportedly, Long’s family borrowed over VND400 million for lobster and cobia aquaculture. However, the two heavy storms last year destroyed all their aquaculture farming cages. In order to help Vien’s family to overcome difficulties, the local authorities acknowledged them as a poor family and offered them social support since 2016. Although Long and Thanh have medical insurance, their disease requires much money for long-term treatments which their family almost cannot afford.

Hopefully, the readers and sponsors everywhere will offer assistance to Vien’s family so that they can cope with the difficulties.
