Le This Lien (born in 1954) and her family are living in a small, old house in Xuan Dong Hamlet, Van Hung Commune, Van Ninh District, Khanh Hoa. They have suffered many hardships for more than ten years due to serious diseases.

Reportedly, her family used to live and earn their living by tapping rubber-trees in Binh Phuoc Province after leaving Thanh Hoa Province in 1984. However, they had to move to Can Tho Province to avoid malaria which often happened in Binh Phuoc at that time.

After saving some money from selling lottery tickets and doing other manual labor works, Lien and her husband moved to Van Ninh District and have settled there. Their three sons and two daughters who are illiterate still lived and worked in Can Tho.

In early 2006, Lien’s son, Tran Trung Tinh (born in 1982), was diagnosed with brain tumor which required urgent surgery. Six months after the surgery, Tinh had epileptic seizures and gradually became paralyzed. In 2008, Tinh was blind in both eyes.

When Tinh suffered serious disease, the eldest son and youngest daughter of Lien left Can Tho Province for Van Ninh District to help their family. Another unfortunate incident came to Lien’s family in April 2018 when she had to be operated for appendicitis at Khanh Hoa General Hospital where she was also diagnosed with severe heart failure and needed to undergo surgery as soon as possible. Although being offered a reduction of 70% on treatment costs thanks to her health insurance, Lien’s family could not afford the initial cost for the surgery (approximately VND40 million). Therefore, Lien has only taken medications since then.

Lien’s husband and children are hired labors with small and unstable income. They had to sell two cows, their most valuable assets, for money to pay for everyday needs and treatment costs.

As reported by Tran Thi Thu, Chairman of Van Hung Commune People’s Committee, Lien and Tinh have been given VND900 thousand per month as a social support for people with severe disabilities and their carers. However, this support is not enough for their treatments.

Hopefully, the readers and sponsors everywhere will offer assistance to Lien’s family so that they can cope with the difficulties.
