Tu's father left home after he was born. Under such a difficult circumstance, Nguyen Anh Thu, Tu's mother, (lives in Cuu Loi 3, Cam Hoa Commune, Cam Lam District) had to go to her poor parents for help.

Reportedly, Thu (born in 1996), the eldest of three siblings, used to be a worker in Suoi Dau Industrial Zone; however, she left her job when she was three months pregnant.
According to Doctor Pham Enga, Head of the Department of Pediatrics of Khanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital, at present, Tu cannot have surgery because of his heart disease. His second anal surgery may be done when Tu is healthy enough.
